SpaceX launches first mission for Starlink Gen2 constellation

Starlink is a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company founded by Elon Musk. The Starlink Gen2 constellation is the second generation of the Starlink satellite network, and it represents a significant expansion of the original constellation.

The Starlink Gen2 constellation is made up of a fleet of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which are positioned at an altitude of about 550 kilometers above the Earth's surface. This is much lower than the altitude of traditional geostationary satellites, which orbit at an altitude of about 35,786 kilometers. The lower altitude of the Starlink Gen2 satellites allows them to provide faster and more reliable internet service, with lower latency and less interference.

As of December 2021, the constellation consisted of more than 1,600 satellites, with plans to eventually have more than 40,000 satellites in orbit. This would make it the largest satellite internet network in the world, capable of providing global coverage.
